About
Step into a world of ancient traditions and indigenous culture. At the Sami Reindeer Camp in Tavelsjö, you’ll get up close to one of Scandinavia’s most iconic animals and experience the life of a reindeer herder in a way that’s both authentic and unforgettable.
At the Sami Camp in Tavelsjö, located 55 km from Granö Beckasin and 25 km from Umeå, you’ll step into a world where reindeer roam freely, and the traditions of the Sami people come alive.
Spend a day experiencing life as a reindeer herder. You’ll have the chance to feed the reindeer with their natural diet, including lichen, and with a little luck, some may even nibble right from your hand!
After feeding, gather inside a traditional gåhtie, a cozy Sami hut or tent, where you’ll hear fascinating stories about these incredible animals and the daily life of a reindeer herder. Learn how to brew coffee over an open fire and enjoy a delicious lunch.
Next, try your hand at one of the most important skills of a herder – lasso throwing. This traditional technique is used to catch reindeer for branding or other essential tasks.
